A lesson in ethics from Bluey

There’s this episode of Bluey where Bingo and Lucky eagerly set up a brand new water slide in Bingo’s backyard. Their giddy fun is interrupted when Bingo notices a leaf bug in the way and yells, “Stop!” The pair inspect the leaf bug more closely and gently move him off the slide to safety. Moments later, a ladybug lands, then along come a couple of ants. The two friends discuss different ways they might enjoy the slide without hurting any living creatures. Lucky suggests they close their eyes.

“What would that do?” Bingo asks.

“We wouldn’t see if we squished any bugs.”

They quickly nix this plan in favor of taking turns being the bug inspector, going slowly and gently setting creatures on the grass before giving the all clear.

My kids, ages 7, 11, and 14, were not numb to the meaning within this brief episode. It has given us a phrase that serves as shorthand in our discussions of ethics.

-Yes, but that would be closing your eyes and going down the water slide.

Thanks, Bluey.
