between the lines

drove my daughter to class

no roads were blocked

drove back home

no one stopped me or asked to see my ID

parked in front of my house

no fighter jets flew low

came home, hung up my car keys

no explosion shook my house

called my mom

phone signals were not down

turned on the stove to make tea

was not out of cooking gas

went online and sent an email

the internet was not down

the teakettle whistled

I did not startle

the fridge hummed

the electrical grid was not down

poured milk into my tea

called my husband to ask him to buy milk

the grocery stores were not flattened

my husband answered the phone

he was not being

detained

beaten

left for dead

  1. I encourage folks to find a local congregation to participate in the World Day of Prayer on the first Friday in March. Palestinian Christian women were chosen several years ago to write the liturgy for 2024, sharing their experiences, dreams, prayers. Getting in touch with women’s experiences around the globe, working together by financially supporting projects to improve the lives of women and their families, praying for wholeness- emotionally tough, but it feels better than closing my eyes and ears or chalking it all up to futility.
